INTRODUCTION
Fashion means the latest and most admired style in clothes and cosmetics and behaviour. Such styles may change quickly. Marie Antoinette was a major fashion icon during the late 18th century.
The women in Kerala have been inclined towards fashion in both traditional and contemporary ways. The women here have been known long for their high status and educational qualifications, with the literacy rate in this state being the highest. But the women of Kerala have also been known for honouring their culture and traditions with as much zeal, which they put into studying. Women in Kerala have been known for their beautiful silk saris and the skirt style drapes that have been long associated with their traditional outfits. But the women in Kerala have emerged over the boundaries of the traditional outfits at home and at work also. Gone are the times when only south cotton or silk saris were considered to be the ideal outfits to be worn at work or homes. Today the women of Kerala have adopted themselves with latest fashion trends. Women at work are now seen in formal trousers and shirts along other formal outfits. The salwar kameez, which had once dominated northern India, has also become a popular outfit with the women here. The women of Kerala now choose comfort over being dressed up but they have retained their traditional attire in all festivals and ceremonies. You will hardly come across any women here who are not dressed up in traditional outfits during the festive season or any other kinds of religious ceremonies. Also gold is one of the most popular forms of jewellery worn by the women here. The women her wear long necklaces of gold, which are rich in craftsmanship and art. The trend of gold still dominates the state though wearing diamonds has also emerged as a popular trend. Gold is also worn in their hair as forms of accessories and jewellery along with the traditional saris. Even though women here are no purchasing more outfits that are in vogue, they still enjoy retaining their traditional attires during the main festivities and prayers. In spite of the changing trends of fashion, the traditional saris worn here never go out of fashion.
The men enjoy the traditional south Indian clothes also known as lungi or mundus, which is usually worn in rich white colours and is usually made from fine silk. They carry stoles with these outfits, which are carried on the shoulders. The men and women merge fashion with tradition and this has also become the trademark for the fashion industry in Kerala.
