It has been seen in most developing economies like India, that people aspire to be famous and make their mark in different industries. But when it comes to fashion both male and female designers have made their marks in the fashion industry. There was a time when fashion for the urban woman was limited to saree and salwar kameez, but with the twist of events in the fashion industry, there has also been a drastic change in the way the Indian women dresses up. You will find offices flooded with women in trousers and shirts, like most other European countries. But the urban woman still does not discard her traditional outfits in spite of the latest brands being available here and gave these outfits a new and contemporary look. The fashion industry is continuously shifting apparels and the Indian woman is following the latest trends. This fashion mania has moved on to the rural sector also and the main credit for this goes to Bollywood, which sets the latest trends for fashion. More and more rural women are also engaging in changing fashions and the 'jeans' has reached the remotest corners of the country. Today people are willing to pay a premium for quality, design and exclusivity of the garment. All generations of women and all categories of women, from a contemporary housewife to a contemporary working class lady, want the best in life. The fashion industry is regularly boosted by the media but there is still a huge gap to be filled between what the Indian women can wear and what she cannot. Due to the rise in crime against women, there are various garments which are listed as 'unsafe' or 'provocative' to be worn in public places. There are many women who still restrict their clothing due to high crimes against women like eve teasing, assault and rape. Though it may seem strange there various lawsuits against women, which have been dismissed due to the woman wearing provocative clothes. There is still the 'commoditization' of women as sex objects and this imposes restrictions on the fashion statements that most women want to make and the kind of clothes and accessories they want to wear. But in spite of these barriers, the Indian women continues to depict her new image of an independent and self confident woman, still striving hard to prove her skills in a male dominated society.
