She cuts a positive, smart and intelligent picture. She convinces you by her articulate conversations, she impresses you with her facial expressions and gestures, she makes you vibe with her feelings through her consideration and “down to earth” image. Not surprisingly, for Ranjini Suresh is a qualified lawyer, a performing artiste and a municipal chairperson - all rolled into one.A post graduate in law from the Ernakulam law college, she was unexpectedly drawn into politics when she happened to win the local elections and then selected as chairman of Tripunithura municipality. Her academic background offered the necessary public speaking skills which came naturally to her.
Kathakali runs through her blood. She has been an avid lover and practitioner of the art form ever since she set foot on stage with her debut performance at the tender age of eight.Training under her father Kalamandalam Karunakaran who was a renowned kathakali artiste himself, Ranjini’s passion for the art form goaded her to achieve more in the field.Being hard working, disciplined and dedicated by nature, she found it easy to hone and develop her hobby.Kathivesham is her favourite role, and her hero, she confesses, has been Ravana and her role model, Kalamandalam Ramankutty Nair. She would like to portray the villainous characters of Duryodhana, Narakasura and the likes.Although she does both the roles pacha and kathi with equal ease, she feels that as a person who welcomes challenge, she’s more cut out for doing the kathi type characters that are required to reflect more of ”rajoguna” or emotions involving anger, excitement, surprise, etc and “tamoguna” or expressions of hate, jealousy, cruelty, and the like.According to her, these characters are more difficult to act out.
From her college days, she has been part of the vanitha troupe of Tripunithura Kathakali Kendram, a registered unit that has been active for the last three decades. This all- women team has gained state-wide and national recognition, the womenfolk having performed all over Kerala and India. They have even managed to make a successful international tour covering a few major states in the U.S.A in 2003.Like Ranjini, the rest of the ladies in the troupe are also working women, juggling to manage their job, maintain their home, and actively persue their hobby as well.As she puts it,”What matters is the right attitude. If you have genuine interest for something, no matter the inconveniences, you are sure to find time for it.”
